24 Unforgettable Duggar Moments That Totally Surprised Us

Sadly, we can't talk about Duggar moments we can't forget without mentioning Josh Duggar's horrifying sex scandals. Leave it to Mama Duggar to keep it real! Michelle Duggar turned heads with her marital advice that included sex. Speaking with CafeMom, Michelle blessed us with some knowledge about the importance of a fruitful sex life.

"More women need to realize that it really is a wonderful thing and a stress reliever for both of you," Michelle reveals. "I think that part isn't spoken enough in our communication, wives to wives."

News of Joy-Anna Duggar's engagement to longtime friend Austin Forsyth didn't come as a huge shock (fans already knew they'd been courting for months), though some were surprised that, at just 19 years old, she was ready to head down the aisle. Fortunately, regardless of how fans felt, they both had the full support of their families.

There's nothing more heartbreaking quite like hearing a child has been mistreated. Amy (Duggar) King has revealed her father once abused her when she was a kid — picking her up by the throat for not brushing her teeth. While so many of us originally thought the Duggar cousin was referring to her husband Dillon when she first revealed her abuse, no one expected this.

Jill and Derick have shown their dedication to ministry by becoming missionaries in Central America. Spending time in El Salvador, the couple later returned with their son Israel ... and stayed while she was expecting their second child, Samuel, which left fans worried about the threat of Zika virus.

You gotta admit it was pretty hilarious seeing Jinger and Jeremy getting scolded by their cooking class instructor for being a little too chummy for her liking. The Duggar family is pretty much known for not stirring the pot when it comes to PDA, but boy did these two! We don't think it was that big of a deal but will never forget seeing it.

With so many successful courtships that turn into engagements and marriages, it was definitely out of the ordinary when Josiah Duggar ended his courtship with now ex, Marjorie Jackson. Things did end up working out for the best, though — he's now married to Lauren, and they have two children (with another on the way).

We're super thankful that Jessa Duggar's home birth of her second son Henry was smooth, but man, do we remember the near 48-hour labor Mom had with Spurgeon. (Ouch.) Not only did Jessa have a long labor but had to go to the hospital due to an excessive loss of blood. It's a relief that everything turned out fine.

Fans have been commenting about Derick's health ever since he and his family took their first missionary trip to Central America. There were noticeable differences that definitely looked like something was wrong. More recently, Jill has reassured fans that Derick is healthy.

With so many rules and things not to do when courting, it was only a matter of time before someone broke a few. Jinger and Jeremy admitted to breaking courtship rules and doing things their way. Shoot, even mom Michelle once joked Jinger and Jeremy defied a couple rules — but nothing that would land them in super hot water. Hey, it all worked out.

There's nothing quite like family, and Michelle and Jim Bob certainly prove that. The Duggar matriarch and patriarch officially have a 20th child. Tyler is the 8-year-old son of Michelle's niece, Rachel Hutchins — and while the family continues to ask for privacy regarding the matter, we're happy everyone seems to be working together for the sake of this little boy.

Holy head-turner, Batman! Amy once dressed up as a prostitute for Halloween but one many of us have come to love: Vivian Ward, aka Julia Roberts from Pretty Woman. Needless to say, this Instagram share is one that steers down a different path from most members of the family (they don't celebrate Halloween) ... but she did nail the look.

Duggar kids have had nice weddings in the past, but there's something about Jinger and Jeremy's nuptials that were truly magical. Everything from the attire to the cake looked absolutely divine, and even looking back on the photos years later reminds us of how special it all was.

One Duggar moment we can never un-see is Derick Dillard rocking a man bun! (LOL.) Whether you're a lover of long hair or are happy he's since cut it off, this little beauty was the talk of the town (or blogs) for some time — and it's remained an unusual 'do among the Duggar men.

Aww. Who else remembers this sweet cousin moment? Israel and Spurgeon looked super cute using FaceTime to stay in touch ... even though we highly doubt either kid knew what the heck was going on. Still, it was a great way for these little ones to stay in touch with Izzy and his family in Central America.

In April 2021, Josh was arrested on federal child pornography charges. He was accused (and later convicted) of downloading and viewing child pornography on his work computer at the car dealership his family owned, leading him to live with another family while out on bail and eventually to fderal prison.

Late in 2020, Justin Duggar made a surprising announcement. At just 17 years old, Justin was already courting a girl named Claire Spivey, and just months later, he'd pop the question. They were married not long after he turned 18, and he moved to Texas, where the couple lives near their family.

Jill had always been super close to her family growing up, but that all changed in her adult years. After a battle for the money she was owed while filming Counting On, Jill found herself estranged from her parents, and no longer visited their home where her younger siblings still lived. These days, she's doing life on her own terms (and yes, that includes wearing pants, shorts, and tank tops — and even drinking alcohol).

After she moved to Los Angeles with Jeremy, Jinger's lifestyle changed, much like Jill's. She's wearing shorts, and even wrote a book that disclosed a lot of personal stories about growing up in the Duggar family. She still seems close to her parents, but she's coming into her own (and surprising longtime fans in the process).

At the end of 2021, fans were shocked to learn that Jana had been charged with child endangerment following an incident and Jim Bob and Michelle's home. Later, Jessa explained that it had been an innocent mistake.

"She was babysitting, and one of the kids slipped out the door unnoticed, but it ended safely," she wrote in an Instagram post.

Ultimately, Jana pled guilty and was hit with a fine of $880.

After Josh was convicted on all charges in federal court, his sentencing was a shocking day for many. In May 2022, Josh learned that he would be serving out a 151-month sentence (a little over 12 years) followed by 20 years of supervised release where he would not be allowed to have a computer or unsupervised contact with minors, including his own children.

After Jinger broke free of the Institute in Basic Life Principles, she published her memoir, Becoming Free Indeed, which called out the cult-like organization for her fear-filled childhood. At this point, it still seems like Jinger's relationship with some of her family members is strained because of it.

Fans were shocked to see Jill Duggar in Amazon Prime's docuseries, Shiny Happy People: Duggar Family Secrets, which exposed the way Jim Bob and Michelle raised their children in the IBLP. Jill and her husband, Derick, both spoke out about their experience, dropping several bombshells along the way.
