15 Times Jessica Simpson Caught Heat for 'Inappropriate' Photos

Maressa Brown

Whether she was simply singing a top 40 pop song, starring as Daisy Duke in The Dukes of Hazzard, or designing A-line dresses and shoes at a reasonable price point, Jessica Simpson can't seem to escape a tongue-lashing from time to time. And of course, since welcoming her two kiddos -- daughter Maxwell Drew, now 5, and son Ace Knute, 4 -- with husband Eric Johnson, the former pop star-turned-fashion entrepreneur has been even more of a target for critical words.

The proud mom of two loves to take to her social media accounts to share cute photos of her kids and her husband, and of course just the occasional selfie. But just about anything and everything Jess posts -- from shots of her daughter's hair color on Halloween to a sexy behind-the-scenes snap featuring a risqué wardrobe choice and a bit of cleavage -- manages to set off a veritable avalanche of tongue-wagging and shaming.

Of course, moms everywhere -- whether they're famous former pop stars and fashion designers or not -- face judgment for just about everything they post online these days. It's just par for the course, right? Unfortunately, while some of Jessica's posts may actually be worthy of debate, many catch heat for one reason alone, and that is the fact that they were shared by Jessica Simpson.

Here, 15 times Jessica Simpson was shamed for her "inappropriate" social media posts.

Maxwell Makeup-Gate

In November, Jessica took to Instagram to share this sweet shot of herself with her daughter Maxwell at the MAC store, noting that it was "mother-daughter day." Seeing 5-year-old Maxwell flaunting a gothy dark lip was too much for many commenters, though, and Jess faced many accusations of allowing her daughter to grow up too fast.

For Halloween 2017, Maxwell dressed up as Belle from Beauty and the Beast, and the blonde 5-year-old rocked brunette tresses à la the Disney character. Her locks were clearly not a wig, so critics assumed Jess dyed her daughter's hair. Others asserted that it was a temporary spray job. Either way, it was another moment in which shamers called Jess's parental judgment into question.

"Green With Envy"

Flaunting her voluptuous figure in a silk green robe around holiday time 2017 got Jess in hot water with commenters who shamed her for the sexy look. Eye. Roll.

Maxwell's Bikini

Last summer, Jessica Simpson took to Insta to share this shot of her daughter riding a scooter on a warm June day. Because she was wearing a helmet, Jess captioned the shot, "Safety first." But soon, she faced backlash for her daughter's swimwear, which some commenters said was sexualizing Maxwell. Judging from the broken link to the original Insta post, Jess even ended up taking the photo down (though not before it was reposted several times over).

Maxwell's Mermaid Costume

After celebrating Maxwell's fifth birthday with a mermaid theme, the proud mama took to Instagram to share this colorful family photo alongside the caption, "My baby Maxwell is 5 years old today. She makes everyone's life mermaid magical. Happy Birthday to our fairytale princess. Mommy, Daddy, and Ace love you with our 'holy hearts' (as Max would say)."

The post was met with negative remarks, like, "Seriously? Your daughter posing like that? In an outfit like that? With a stupid 'trying to look sexy face' look .. Highly disturbing. And you look like a stripper .. Not a mom throwing her 5 year old a birthday party. This picture screams 'dysfunctional' ... Sad." So uncalled for!

Ace's 'Moana' Birthday Party

When Ace turned 4 last summer, Jess and Eric threw their little boy a Moana-themed birthday party, sharing this and other shots from the party to Instagram. Critics (who really need to just let Jessica live!) slammed the party as "excessive." "I'd like to see those toys going to a charity that gives to kids that have nothing. Not impressed!" one commenter wrote.

That said, Simpson has been philanthropic throughout her career, donating to and volunteering for charities, such as GOOD+Foundation, a nonprofit organization that donates children's products and services to families in need to break the cycle of poverty. She also recently donated $10K to the Boys & Girls Club of Waco, Texas.

Eric's 'Shoe Game'

"My husband’s shoe game makes me want to bang #morningwalk #ShoeCrushSaturday," Jessica captioned this eyebrow-raising shot of her husband's feet back in January. The post was met with laughter from some fans -- and exclamations of "ew" and "stay classy!" from others.

'Fifty Shades of Johnson'

The mom of two proudly took to Instagram around Valentine's Day 2015 to share this sexy black and white shot of herself and her husband with the caption, "#FiftyShadesofJohnson." The shot certainly got tongues wagging, but Jess later defended herself on the Today show, noting, "I am not shy to be in love with my husband!" You tell 'em!

The Many Faces of Maxi Drew

Last November, Jess posted this triptych of Maxi Drew, which you would think would be completely harmless to most Instagram followers' eyeballs, right? But nope, it earned Jess shaming about a.) sharing too many photos of her daughter, because her Insta should be all Jess all the time, b.) the car seat -- of course, people had to weigh in on the car seat, and say the buckle should be down lower, and c.) how she shouldn't share photos of her daughter, because there are "perverts" in the world. She just can't win!

Jessica's "Fake" Lips Debate

When Jess posted this seemingly innocuous shot of herself wearing an eye mask back in December, lots of followers could only focus on her lips. "Stop messing up your lips," one commenter wrote.

The Pigtails Incident

In October 2017, Jessica shared this highly styled promo for her fall fashion line with the caption, "Channeling my inner school girl #fall17." For some reason, seeing the mommypreneur rock pigtails set off commenters who went so far as to call this the "creepiest thing on the Internet." Wow.

Eric's 38th Birthday Photo

Clearly, Jess has been accused of posting inappropriate photos so many times that she's over it and has no shame posting whatever the heck her heart desires. And in the case of her husband's 38th birthday, Jess wanted to share this shot of her beloved and her beautiful booty. "38 IS GREAT #IAMSOHOTFORYOU," the fashion designer captioned the racy shot. Of course, commenters really just could not deal, calling the photo "highly inappropriate." Though, pretty sure Jess is #sorrynotsorry.

The 'Vanity Fair' Photo

In November 2017, Jessica shared this sultry #TBT of herself in Vanity Fair, and commenters had a field day ripping her for an overly Photoshopped knee. "Young women all around...look and see how photoshop can boost your self esteem," one wrote. Sigh.

Maxwell's 'Sexy' Pose

"Wheels up to Waco! ✈️#wheelsandheels #MAXIDREW (Ace was too shy for the pic 😉)," Jess captioned this May 2017 shot of herself with her mini-me daughter. The innocent mother-daughter image may have very well riled up shamers, who also felt the need to accuse Jess of photoshopping her legs. "Nice photoshop of your thighs, you make your calves look bigger than them," one troll wrote. So. Wrong.

"Kiss My Butt, 36"

To celebrate her 37th birthday, Jessica posted this topless, booty-ful shot of herself with the caption, "Kiss My Butt 36." Of course some commenters couldn't help themselves, leaving nasty, obviously envy-induced remarks like, "Narcissistic much?" But per usual, the successful businesswoman and proud mama is obviously having far too much fun to care!
