Fans Come to Prince George's Defense After Lara Spencer's Insensitive Ballet Comments

Nicole Fabian-Weber

As most royal fans know, Kate Middleton and Prince William are raising Prince George to be a well-rounded member of society. In addition to enjoying soccer, science, and cooking, the heir to the throne also partakes in dance -- ballet, specifically. In the past, Prince William has remarked on how much George loves ballet, but evidently, TV personality Lara Spencer couldn't wrap her head around the concept. On Thursday, the Good Morning America host made an insensitive comment on George's beloved pastime, and need we even tell you? It did not go over well with people.

In a Pop News segment, Spencer took a little dig at Prince George's hobby.

"The future King of England will be putting down the Play-Doh to take on religious studies, computer programming, poetry and ballet, among other things," Spencer said while giggling. "Prince William says Prince George absolutely loves ballet. I have news for you, Prince William: We’ll see how long that lasts. I mean, he might! He might end up … Between the religious studies and the computer programming, I just want to go back to the Play-Doh!”

Wow.

Not long after the insensitive remark, people started attacking Spencer on social media, causing the journalist to issue an apology on Instagram.

Additionally, Spencer called So You Think You Can Dance's Travis Wall to apologize for her comment. In an Instagram story, Wall said:

"So Lara Spencer just called me on my cell phone, she got my number from Debbie Allen, and she is completely horrified and just truly just issued this massive apology. I could just hear the horror in her voice. She knows there’s a bunch of us, Broadway and a lot of the ballet community here in New York City, we’re going to Good Morning America on Monday morning and taking ballet classes outside. So she’s aware of it, and she wants to talk to all of us, and she wants to set this thing straight and right. So the dance community is incredible and our voices were heard which is fantastic. Hooray!"

Before Spencer called him, Wall posted a message on Instagram, calling out the TV host for "contributing to a massive problem" -- bullying.

After the video, Wall received a ton of support in the form of comments from fans and famous folk alike.

And on the flip side, Spencer receive a ton of backlash on her Instagram account.

"What is wrong with a boy doing ballet?" she asked.

"What century do you live in?" she wanted to know.

Yikes.

People have made their voices loud and clear on social media -- especially Wall, who so eloquently and thoughtfully got his point across.

In a segment on GMA on Monday, Spencer -- again -- apologized and called her comments "stupid" before sitting down with three celebrated male members of the dance community.

Did she learn a lesson? Let's all hope so.
