Here Are 25 Black-Owned Brands Anyone Can Shop at Target
The impact from the Black Lives Matter protests for antiracist overhauls in society and for our police forces are still reverberating. Those protests, sparked by the death of a Black man named George Floyd, have many people, finally, waking up to the systemic racism in this country. But being awake is not enough. For parents who want to support the Black community, it's important to continue speaking up and supporting our Black brothers and sisters.
Aside from speaking up, one of the easiest ways to do that is by shopping Black and supporting Black-owned businesses. There are plenty to chose from (we've already compiled a bunch here). But Target has made it even easier. The store has long been a proponent of Black Lives. We compiled a list of brands to specifically find at Target stores across the country.
Soapsox
Soapsox founder and CEO Ray Phillips is the brains behind the brand, which makes stuffed-animal-style wash mitts for kids. According to the website, he came up with the idea after working at a residential treatment facility with children who had experienced trauma and had trouble at bath time. Now, Target sells them.
Lion Bath Sponge ($10)
Scotch Porter
Calvin Quallis is the founder and CEO of Scotch Porter, a men's personal hygiene and grooming brand with products focusing on skin care, beard and hair care. Quallis started out in a barbershop and now has his line in Target.
Scotch Porter Beard Wash ($12)
Bevel
Bevel is another men's grooming company with a focus on shaving sensitive skin and wellness for people of color. Founder Tristan Walker started the brand and it has since been bought by Proctor & Gamble, but he remains CEO.
The Lip Bar
The Lip Bar is among the biggest names in beauty at Target. Its line of glosses, matte lipsticks, and other makeup is inclusive, vegan, cruelty-free, and worth buying — and prices are reasonable. It was founded by Melissa Butler and was rejected by Shark Tank. Joke is on them.
The Doux
The Doux knows about hair care, especially for people of different backgrounds. Or as its tagline says, "Sucka-free Hair care created by a licensed cosmetologist. All types, no hype." But we must hype Maya Smith, the brand's founder.
Carol's Daughter
Carol's Daughter is a black-owned brand at Target (founded by Lisa Page) that has a lot of clout when it comes to sulfate-free hair care for all types of hair as well as skin care. The names themselves are incredibly delectable sounding, too.
Carol's Daughter Black Vanilla Moisture and Shine Leave-In Conditioner ($11)
Black Girl Sunscreen
Black Girl Sunscreen is the sunscreen that is made by a Black woman for people of color or anyone with a darker skin tone who doesn't want that white residue left behind when using SPF, kids included. It was founded in 2016 and has been killing the game ever since.
SheaMoisture
SheaMoisture is prominent in many drugstores and known for not just women of color but any kind of hair, especially curly hair. The line's founders are the granddaughters of Sofi Tucker, a woman who sold shea butter, African black soap, and homemade hair and skin preparations all over her native Sierra Leone.
SheaMoisture Red Palm Oil & Cocoa Butter Rinse Out or Leave In Conditioner ($8)
The Honey Pot
The Honey Pot found a space in feminine care products that desperately needed to be filled — one for plant-based products. The brand sells everything from intimate wipes to menstrual pads and more. Beatrice Dixon started the brand and according to Forbes, became "one of the first 40 women of color to raise $1 million in venture capital."
Bolden Skin
Skin care is surging in popularity these days, even pre-lockdown, and brightening dark spots skin and improving glow with vitamin C is one of the many ways people look to improve theirs. Enter Bolden, a skin care brand that Ndidi Obidoa and Chinelo Chidozie founded that dubs Bolden Skin the "Melanin experts."

Wanna see a rock star? Meet Alikay's founder Rochelle Graham-Campbell. She started the brand when she was 22 years old and has grown it into a million-dollar business. The company prides itself on natural ingredients.
Mielle Organics
Mielle Organics sets itself apart with its bright and fun packaging for its hair care products, but it's also a Black-owned brand that is available on the Target shelves. Monique Rodriguez launched the company in 2018 with a goal "to create a line of natural beauty products for all hair types."
BLK & Bold Coffee
It's time to rise and grind. The creators of BLK and Bold coffee sure did and they're seeing excellent results. It has rave reviews on Target and a fabulous story to match. Pernell Cezar Jr and Rod Johnson founded the company that became the first Black-owned nationally distributed coffee company by Target. The company donates 5% of profits to organizations that help with youth programming, workforce development, and eradicating youth homelessness.
BLK & Bold Rise & Grind ($13)
Capital City
Capital City Sweet Mambo Hot Sauce, award-winning and famous in Washington, D.C., is as good as it sounds. Its founders, husband and wife team Charles and Arsha Jones, started the business in their Annapolis home in 2011.
Girl + Hair
Dr. Camille Verovic founded Girl + Hair, a company dedicated to "under hair care" for women. She's a medical doctor so it's clear that she's the real deal. She says she realized there were no natural hair care products specifically to help maintain and grow natural hair while it was in a braided protective style. So, she created some.
Girl + Hair Restore+ ($16)
Eden Bodyworks
Eden Bodyworks founder Jasmine Lawrence started the company in 2011. "At age 11, Lawrence was shocked to learn about the lack of natural products that could help nurture and restore her hair. So, in true entrepreneurial fashion, she took to her kitchen and began concocting her own remedies." Enter Eden, which sells products for all types of hair concerns.
There is no shortage of lipsticks on the market, but when it comes to lipsticks that are made for both lighter and darker lip tones, that's where Mented Cosmetics comes in. The brand has a line of different cosmetics at Target including the semi-matte lipstick, which has nine different shades and 5-star reviews.
Hair care is huge, and people are always on the hunt for a good shampoo and conditioner set. If that sounds like you, look no further than Hannah Diop & Issa Rae's brand Sienna Naturals. If there's an opportunity to eat allergy-safe cookies and support a Black-owned business in the process, you need to take it. The brand was founded in 2016 by "CEO Denise Woodard, when her daughter was diagnosed with multiple food allergies."
OK, how adorable are these Black History onesies? Target produced the cute little 'fits that feature the names of historical Black figures, like Frederick Douglass and Sojourner Truth, with the help of "Bridgeforth Farms, a 4th and 5th generation Black-owned cotton farming family business located in Tanner, AL," which provided 20% of the fiber.

According to the brand description, "Jam+ Rico travels to Caribbean countries finding inspiration from the people, culture, music and terrain."
Be Rooted journals like this one named "Manifest Your Dreams" are chic and will make anyone who likes to journal more excited to write. According to the product description, "Jasmin Foster founded Be Rooted to create a space for women of color to see themselves in a place they hadn’t been." Each journal cover features an artistic silhouette of a Black woman.
One can never have too many tank tops, especially ones that allow us to show off Black pride front and center. The tank tops are unisex, each with a black base fabric and white wording that says "Unapologetically Black and Proud." Target produced the tanks with Alice Butts, a graphic designer from Brooklyn, New York.
It's hard for an adult to walk into a Target and not come out with a bunch of items, and the same goes for kids in the toy section. Instead of going for the same big brands, shop Black-owned and small, like The Fresh Dolls. The brand, founded by entrepreneur Dr. Lisa, has a multicultural doll line with each having its own distinctive look and story.
