7-Year-Old Comes Face-to-Face With Black Bear While Riding His Scooter

If you’re not careful, it can take you right out of here. Thankfully, when one 7-year-old boy came face to face with this prospect, he remained calm and managed to scoot away from the potentially dangerous situation completely unharmed.

The child was on his scooter when a bear came right up to him.

Huxley Hardy Penner was out on his scooter near his home in British Columbia, Canada, when he spotted a large black bear across the street. Almost immediately, the bear made its way toward Huxley, as video from Nest security footage revealed.

Huxley handled the situation perfectly. He remained calm, staring back at the bear and remaining still.

The two were looking at each other, neither moving.

In the clip, later obtained by Inside Edition, the two are looking at each other, neither one moving. Eventually, Huxley’s neighbor emerges. He walks, with his arms raised high, right toward the bear.

The attempt to make himself look larger than he is, worked. The bear scurried behind a parked car. The neighbor continued waling toward the bear, while Huxley maintains his perch on the scooter.

Huxley's mom said they'd talked about bears before.

Eventually, the bear is frightened enough to run off. Once he’s gone, the neighbor goes his way and Huxley pushes off of his scooter. Later, in a sit down with Inside Edition, Huxley’s mom said that the two have talked about what to do in this type of situation.

“We’ve had conversations about being aware, being aware of your surroundings,” she explained. “And if there is a bear and you’re not with an adult, be calm.”

'I'm super proud of him,' Huxley's mom said.

Huxley listened well. “I think most adults even in that moment would have perhaps panicked or run away,” his mother said. “Not everybody knows what to do so I’m super proud of him.” We are, too. Who knows if we would have been so cool under pressure.
