20 Best Horror Movies of All Time, Ranked

Shayne Rodriguez Thompson

When it comes to movies, horror is probably one of the most over-saturated genres of them all. Scores of new scary movies come out every single year, and to be honest, most of them are trash. For true horror lovers, though, the few that are really good, make it totally worth screening all the duds to find a film that's appeal endures. There's absolutely nothing like the mind-altering experience of watching a movie that brings everyone's worst nightmares to life. The scare is exhilarating, and that's exactly what keeps us coming back to our favorite horror flicks again and again.

No matter how much time has passed since their release — or how many times we've seen them — some horror movies are so good that we watch them over and over, eventually introducing them to our friends, families, and even to our own children (when they're old enough, of course). We're talking about the horror films that are almost universally accepted as the best of the best. Some are so deserving that they routinely make "greatest horror films of all time" lists — like Ranker's — and we have to say, we absolutely agree with all of them. Ranker's list is voted on by fans in real time, so it's ever-changing, but these are 20 of the horror classics that make the list on the regular.

Keep reading to see which movies they are, and why they hold so much appeal to horror fans.
