Drew Barrymore Opens Up About Getting Sober After Drinking To 'Numb the Pain' of Divorce

Lauren Wellbank

We're used to hearing the hard truths from Drew Barrymore, which is why fans are likely unsurprised to find the actress and TV host opening up about a very difficult time in her life. The mother of two recently got candid with People about her sobriety and how her daughters help keep her from falling into old negative patterns.

Drew talked about how she fell off the wagon after her 2016 split from Will Kopelman.

Drew, who graces the cover of People's January 9 issue, shared how the pain of her divorce from Will prompted her to start drinking again after battling drugs and alcohol as a child. She called the split "excruciating" and said it "broke" her in ways she hadn't expected.

She turned to alcohol to deal with the heartache.

Drew has said in the past that "nothing went wrong" when she and Will divorced, which likely made the experience that much harder for the actress to navigate. "It was just trying to … feel good — and alcohol totally did that for me," she explained of once again turning to substances to help her cope.

The 47-year-old said the booze only made things worse in the long run.

Instead of helping, Drew found that alcohol only exasperated many of her problems. "The drinking thing for me was a constant, like, 'You cannot change. You are weak and incapable of doing what's best for you. You keep thinking you will master this thing, and it's getting the better of you,'" she said.

Ultimately, it was Drew's daughters who helped her get sober again.

Noting that part of her anguish had to do with the fact that the life she planned for her daughters, Olive and Frankie, hadn't worked out, Drew said she used the girls as inspiration to go to therapy and get help. Eventually, she was able to get on the path to recovery, and she's been abstaining from alcohol ever since.

She still hasn't found love again, though.

Although Drew has made it nearly seven years into her sobriety journey, she isn't quite ready to pursue another romance. She has been open about the fact that she doesn't feel pressured by a need for the physical comfort of a partner and that she's struggled to find someone she connects with on an emotional level.

Still, Drew may not have found the one yet, but she's definitely won over the hearts of her fans. We're all pulling for you, Drew. Stay strong!
