The scary news was uncovered during a routine mammogram, which may have saved the Duchess of York's life. Now, her rep says she's at home recuperating after undergoing surgery to remove the cancer.

She's already on the road to recovery.

Her representative spoke to People about the health scare.

"Sarah, Duchess of York was recently diagnosed with an early form of breast cancer detected at a routine mammogram screening," the person explained. "She was advised she needed to undergo surgery, which has taken place successfully."

The diagnosis must've been terrifying news to hear!

Her medical team got right on the case.

Doctors didn't waste any time when it came to making sure Sarah was taken care of.

She gives a lot of credit to the routine mammogram for finding the cancer.

There weren't any signs that anything was amiss, which is why it was so lucky that Sarah had her annual exam.

"She is also hugely thankful to the staff involved in the mammogram which identified her illness, which was otherwise symptom free, and believes her experience underlines the importance of regular screening," her representative concluded.
