Kate Middleton Hospitalized After Major Surgery Requiring Over 3 Months of Recovery

It looks like the rest of the royal family is going to be picking up some slack for the next few months because Kate Middleton is out of commission for the foreseeable future. On Wednesday morning, the palace announced that Kate has been hospitalized after a planned abdominal surgery, and although officials didn't share what procedure the Princess of Wales has undergone, it's serious enough that she won't return to her royal duties until after the Easter holiday.

The palace shared the announcement on social media.

"Her royal highness the Princess of Wales was admitted to hospital yesterday for planned abdominal surgery," read the statement, shared on Instagram. "The surgery was successful, and it is expected that she will remain in hospital for ten to fourteen days, before returning home to continue her recovery. Based on the current medical advice, she is unlikely to return to public duties until after Easter."

Kate will keep the details of her procedure private.

The statement went on to explain that she wants to keep life as normal as possible for children George, Charlotte, and Louis, so the details around her medical condition will remain as private as possible.

The palace added it will "only provide updates on Her Royal Highness’ progress when there is significant new information to share."

Kate is expected to remain in the hospital for 10 to 14 days.

According to what ITV News royal editor Chris Ship has shared on X (formerly Twitter), Kate's surgery was noncancerous, and she already has a plan in place for recovery. She'll be spending this time at her home in Windsor with her family, which includes Prince William, who Ship said also will be working a lighter schedule so he will be around to care for Kate and the kids as she recovers.

Will and Kate's plans will look a little different for the time being.

According to Ship, this means there likely won't be any travel in the cards for Will and Kate, so that much-speculated trip to Italy that was reportedly planned to happen this spring definitely isn't on the books anymore. It seems that for the beginning of 2024, these two will be laying low.

Here's hoping Kate has a smooth recovery.

Although there are still a lot of questions around Kate's hospitalization, it does sound like everything has gone well so far. Fingers crossed that she'll have plenty of time to recover and rest over the next several weeks. As moms, we know that's often easier said than done with three little ones underfoot!
