Man Leaves Food To 'Rot' in the Kitchen, Does Nothing While His Wife & Son Battle COVID

Veronica Wells-Puoane

We don’t have to tell you that the division of household labor is largely unbalanced in many homes. Whether a woman works outside of the home, or is a stay-at-home mom, there’s a strong possibility that she does most of the household chores.

Most women are just not equal in that way … yet. One recent TikTok video of a mother cleaning her kitchen after a week of sickness showed just how bad things really are.

'It’s been seven days since I cleaned my kitchen,' Hannah said.

Hannah Misra is a wife and mother on her healing journey. She also uses her TikTok page to document her forays in “reluctant cleaning.” There are plenty of cleaning videos, but one of Hannah in her kitchen happened to go viral because of what she mentioned about her husband.

“It’s been seven days since I cleaned my kitchen,” Hannah begins. “In fact, it’s been seven days since I stepped foot in it,” she adds. “My son and I got COVID while my husband somehow managed to avoid it.” But COVID wasn’t the only thing her husband managed to avoid.

Hannah felt ashamed at the state of her kitchen.

While Hannah and her son were sick, it appears that her husband ate, but didn’t touch the kitchen. What makes matters worse is that Hannah seems to be holding the shame around her husband’s laziness. As she disposes of rotting food and loads the dishwasher, she says, "A huge part of me wants to feel shame over how this kitchen looks … but I refuse to tear myself down over the state of this kitchen."

Hannah said that most days she was too exhausted to get out of bed. When she regained some of her strength, she took care of her child, did the laundry, and cleaned the entire top floor of her home.

'You married a child,' one user commented.

Immediately, people wondered what her husband did during this week, since he was completely healthy. Hannah didn’t respond to those inquiries. But when someone asked her why she was the one doing it, she replied simply, “Because it needed to be done <3.”

That didn’t stop the pile on for Hannah’s unseen and unhelpful husband. TikTok user Nene, @jusnene, created a stitch calling Hannah’s husband useless. “You mean to tell me your husband let the house get that filthy because you could not touch anything?!” she asked. “Your husband is trash … He is useless and he needs to be gone … You didn’t marry a man. You married a child,” Nene continued.

This wasn't the only example.

Other videos showed this is not the only time her husband refused to help out. There were other videos of Hannah cleaning her kitchen while her husband makes himself something to drink or casually watches television.

Again, she berates herself for not doing better. Still, people wondered why her husband didn’t notice the dishes piling up.

Someone said Hannah should leave. She responded.

One user suggested Hannah leave her husband because it would be easier for her that way. Hannah is not ready to do that. “It probably would be less physical work,” she wrote. “But he has helped me and loved me through some of my hardest moments. It doesn’t excuse the lack of cleaning, but he’s showed up in other ways.”

In the same ways Hannah acknowledges that she could do better, so could her husband, and they both should know that, too.
