Melissa Joan Hart Is Playing a Grandma in New Movie & People Are Freaking Out

Nicole Pomarico

If you grew up in the '90s, there's a good chance that when you think of Melissa Joan Hart, you immediately think of her popular sitcom Sabrina the Teenage Witch. But we've all grown up a lot since then, Melissa included — and now, not only is she a mom of three, but she's also continued to act in other roles. Her latest is raising a few eyebrows, though, because Melissa is playing a grandmother in a new Lifetime movie, leading to people having a bit of a crisis about how quickly time is passing.

A clip of Melissa in her new role is going around on X (formerly Twitter).

As Huffington Post reported, after one fan pointed out that Melissa is playing a grandmother in a new movie, she returned to share the clip she saw, where Melissa is making Christmas dinner. One of the kids at the table says "Thank you, grandma," which is all some people needed to hear to launch into a full existential crisis.

People aren't happy about Melissa playing a grandmother.

Even though some people are using this opportunity to shine a light on ageism in Hollywood — after all, Melissa is only 47 years old — others are wondering if this means that they are old.

"There was once a time when you only saw Melissa Joan Hart play the love interest in made-for-TV Christmas movies. That era seems to be over. She's now playing the grandmother in made-for-TV Christmas movies," one tweet read.

Melissa's new movie is based on a true crime story.

As People reported earlier this year, the movie, Would You Kill For Me? The Mary Bailey Story, tells the story of Mary Bailey, who was just 11 years old when her mother, Priscilla Wyers, forced her to shoot and kill her abusive stepfather, Wayne Wyers, in 1987.

Charges against Mary were dropped, though Priscilla was found guilty of first-degree murder. She was released after she became eligible for parole in 1998. In the movie, Melissa is playing Mary's grandmother, and Mary is played by Presley Allard.

Melissa has already spoken out about people's reactions.

In a post on Instagram, Melissa joked about the role while also admitting that she was "flattered" that people still considered her young.

"While I'm proud of my performance in my most recent movie #WouldYouKillForMe, I couldn't be more flattered that people don't think of me as a grandmother (no matter how possible it is at the age of 47)," she wrote. "It's also refreshing to go viral for my work and not something controversial. I guess now Clarissa can Explain AARP or play the Middle-Aged Witch."

Some of us *are* getting older ...

In fact, many of us who discovered Melissa and her talent on Clarissa Explains It All and Sabrina the Teenage Witch are now moms ourselves.

Still, 47 is pretty young, especially when it comes to being a grandmother, and age is nothing but a number.
