One Man Told His Wife She Does 'Nothing Around the House' So She Went on Strike

Hannah Lacy

One woman’s husband had the nerve to make a comment about her “doing nothing around the house” so rather than fight, she went on “strike” and stopped cleaning for several days. The woman, Lindsay Donnelly, made a video about it and it went viral on TikTok, receiving nearly 20,000 comments and over 14 million views. In the video, Lindsay shares the comment her husband made and proceeds to show various parts of her house after she decided he needed to see what “doing nothing” really looks like, with "Karma" by Taylor Swift playing in the background.

Lindsay’s video struck a major chord with fellow women and TikTok users, with many commenting saying that’s exactly why they aren’t married or saying her husband's comment would equal an automatic divorce for them. Others shared their own “strike stories” and pointed out that what Lindsay did makes the “invisible work visible.”

Her husband's comment represents an outdated stereotype and expectation that women should do all the household labor.

The comment made by Lindsay’s husband represents an archaic and outdated expectation that women are responsible for all the household chores, even though any parent who spends time at home knows watching kids alone is a full-time job.

On top of that, Lindsay herself has a full-time job just like her husband Brian, per Today. Lindsay runs a social media marketing agency, while Brian works full time in venture capital. The pair have two children ages 7 and 4, the outlet reported.

Lindsay revealed the situation that led to her “strike” and viral TikTok video. “The night he made the comment, I was getting the kids ready for bed, and he was cleaning up in the kitchen. I noticed he was kind of grumpy and I was like, ‘What’s going on?’ And that’s when he made the comment about me doing nothing around the house,” she explained. She added, "I didn't want to yell and scream and fight about it. I wanted to prove a point in a funny way."

Since he thought she did 'nothing,' she proved her point in the best and funniest way possible.

Lindsay’s plan of going on “strike” apparently worked and was very effective. Lindsay told Today that after she proved her point by “doing nothing” around the house for several days, she went on a girls' trip for the weekend and came home to a clean home and a clean car.

Brian admitted that he regretted making the comment in that moment. “I was feeling frustrated and I directed that at her,” he said. Lindsay added, “He told me he was so sorry,” and that “He really is an amazing husband. That was just one moment."

She posted a follow-up video and her husband made a 'public' apology.

Many of Lindsay’s followers on TikTok said they needed an update, so she and her husband did a follow-up video response to a comment on her original video that went viral. Lindsay appears to be alternating from laughing to crying while her husband is just acknowledging what she’s saying and sitting there, occasionally adding a comment.

She says, "So, I'm doing this video for you to have your opportunity." Her husband replies, "Opportunity for what?" Lindsay answers, "For you to redeem yourself for saying that." He responds with, “Sorry, TikTok.”

But many users seemed to think his response and demeanor was giving off “weird vibes” and “red flags.” While things are never what they seem, especially on social media, we hope Lindsay got a sincere apology off camera and more help around the house.

Her video resonated with many fellow TikTok users and women.

“Can you say: DIVORCE?" one woman commented. "That is absolutely no respect for you. He can get over himself.”

“Honestly this is why I refuse to get married!" wrote another. "I refuse to deal with this everyday potentially for my entire life. I refuse.”

Another user wrote: “This is a really good idea. no fighting, no justifying, no defending herself. actions > words.”

Others shared that they had gone on similar “strikes” in their own home and that this is what makes the “invisible” labor that many women do in their homes more “visible.”

“Mine too 😂 a month went by of me actually doing nothing and he finally apologized," wrote one user. "Never said it again."

“I hope he woke up and started to appreciate ALL the 'invisible' work you do for HIM and your family,” commented another.
