My Son's Teacher Tried To Shame Him for Missing School With Passive-Aggressive Homework

Veronica Wells-Puoane

There are hundreds of reasons why children might miss school. They could be feeling ill, visiting the doctor, dealing with a family emergency, or simply taking a mental health day.

As important as most parents believe school to be, there are times when things come up ... life happens. The same is true for adults who have to clock in at work. This simple fact is the reason one mother on Reddit couldn’t understand why her child was shamed for missing a single day of school.

This mom didn't know if the assignment was meant for her or her son.

A Reddit user posted the worksheet her son’s teacher sent him home with after he missed one day of school.

The mother posted the worksheet with this question: “I just don’t know how to feel about this ... Is this directed at the parents or just a fun worksheet?”

The worksheet was a crossword puzzle that featured words like “absent,” “excuse,” “graduate,” and “slick.”

The crossword puzzle was titled, 'Miss School ... Miss Out.'

In case there was any confusion about the lesson this worksheet was trying to impart, the title read: “Miss School ... Miss Out.” The OP said her son had to ask her what “truant” meant.

Furthermore, the mother wasn’t informed that absences come with special assignments. Instead, she found the worksheet in her son’s backpack.

'I find this sort of shaming behavior towards children so odd,' one commenter wrote.

Although she questioned the assignment’s intent, fellow Reddit users were quick to point the finger at the teacher.

“I find this sort of shaming behavior towards children so odd, “ one user wrote. “It’s not like the eight-year-old is responsible for themselves attending school (even if put on a school bus). It’s the responsibility of the parent/guardian to have their child attend.”

Another person claimed that the teacher didn’t have the right to insert herself into what could have been a personal matter. “There are so many valid reasons to be late/out of class, and 95 percent of them are frankly too personal to expect people to share,” the person wrote.

Others claimed this mother and other users were blowing this out of proportion.

There were some who didn’t think the assignment warranted any outrage at all.

“Am I crazy or does this not seem like a big deal and everyone is making a mountain out of a mole hill?” one user asked. “Oh my god your child was given a wordsearch. The horror. I hope you can find a therapist that can help them overcome such an agonizing trauma.”

Other people shared that this was better than the punishments they received as children such as copying definitions from the dictionary and writing them over and over or receiving detention.
