TikTok Mom Who Was Once 'Addicted to Botox' Explains Why She Quit After Many Fails
In this world, beauty is a commodity. It can take you a lot of places and even bar you from some of them. It’s no surprise that beauty standards and even requirements, more heavily affect women. It’s in the media, in the marketing, and after centuries of indoctrination, in our minds as well.
We all fall victim to it in one way or another. One mother recently shared her story of using Botox on TikTok. While it was something she initially indulged in happily — even saying that at one point, she was "addicted" — she had to leave it alone once she began noticing the adverse affects.
'I used to be addicted to Botox,' Brooke said.
Brooke, who goes by @brookehutty on TikTok, shared her “Cosmetic Procedure Fails” in a series of videos. In the first one, where she discussed Masseter Botox, she begins with a slightly alarming statement.
“I used to be addicted to Botox and filler,” Brooke continued, “I say addicted because after multiple years and multiple pretty terrible outcomes, I kept going back.”
Brooke says in retrospect, it was kind of ridiculous.
Brooke, who is also an ER nurse, says today, it’s been a year since she’s had any procedures. “Honestly now, just looking back, it’s kind of ridiculous.” But now, she’s happy to share her fails.
Brooke wanted to make it clear that those negative outcomes weren’t the result of an inexperienced provider. “This wasn’t some Groupon injector. This is a very sought after injector," she says.
'I had trouble eating, talking, and obviously smiling,' Brooke said.
Still, Brooke said she’s not blaming this provider. Then Brooke moves her head to show a picture of her from her Botox days. In it, the corner of her lip is frozen in a curled position. “This was me for three to four months. I had trouble talking, eating, obviously smiling. Any sort of thing to do with my mouth … unn hmm.”
Brooke said the experience was mortifying.
Brooke said the image, and likely the experience, was mortifying. In a second video, she answered questions from people on TikTok. Brooke explained that she got 30 units on each side of her face. She said she believes she was dosed appropriately and not injected with too much, because it was such a big muscle.
She also said it slimmed the area. While she said it did what it was supposed to do at least on the one side, Brooke said she was issued a refund for the $780 procedure due to the facial paralysis she experienced.
'It wasn't worth it,' Brooke says.
Now, she feels like that’s a “ridiculous amount of money to spend on something that just ended up being so vain.” She said it wasn’t necessary and not something she would do again because it just wasn’t worth it.
In another video, Brooke shared another adverse effect from her surgery: A twitching jaw muscle at the site of her injection.
She also shared her experience with 'the walnut effect.'
In audio narration over several videos of her muscle twitching, Brooke said, “I’m pretty sure this is called the walnut effect and it happens after you get Masseter Botox. She asked injectors to explain why this might happen. One injector did respond, saying additional procedures would remedy the issue.
“You usually need 2 high doses to fully relax the muscle, so you either need more botox or it’s not fully kicked in yet,” one user offered.
Other injectors agreed and claimed that in a couple of weeks, it would settle.
It's not a decision that should be taken lightly.
Bottom line: while cosmetic procedures like Botox and fillers are incredibly commonplace now, that doesn't mean it's a decision that should be taken lightly. There's a risk to everything, and we all need to be weighing the pros and cons before we go under the needle. Even if those cons are only financial. Remember, Botox and fillers are temporary!
