We're Obsessed With This TikTok Mom's Adorable & Healthy School Lunch Idea
Getting kids to eat can be a chore. Even if they are not particularly picky eaters, packing a school lunch and expecting them to eat it without you there to remind them to take bites is a pipe dream for some. But what if you could make lunch more fun? A kid enticed by a food's appearance and texture is more likely to dig in and get the proper nutrients and fuel they need to get through the school day.
One mom from Maryland has taken her daughter's lunches and transformed them into not just a meal but an adventure.
She's a mom on a mission.
Carlena Davis, a mom from Bowie, Maryland, is a food content creator and children's book author. Her Instagram page, Spilling_The_Sweet_Tea, is loaded with mouth-watering images. Among those are great tips and tricks for parents to help their children make good, healthy food choices.
Her textbook tortillas are a sensation.
Davis created her "school book sandwiches" after being inspired by a post on Pinterest. Her quick tutorial on Instagram reels already has been viewed nearly 100,000 times. The how-to is simple and super cute. Davis makes the sandwiches out of tortillas that she cuts into squares and folds over to look like a book.
She cuts meat and cheese to fit and spreads a little mayo inside. She writes different school subjects on each book using edible markers. The video shows her daughter's complete lunch with sandwiches, pretzels, some fruit, and a sweet treat. This makes for a fun, nutritious meal.
Davis wanted to come up with something fun for her daughter.
Davis told Fox News Digital that her 7-year-old daughter, Maya, tends to be a bit picky, and she wanted to do something fun that would entice her to eat. She said the sandwiches are simple and fun to make once you get the cutting part down. And she loves to decorate them.
Davis uses edible pens to write the school subjects on the tortilla "book covers." "That's what makes it cute," she told the news outlet. "Stack it up and you can see the subjects on the side as well as the front."
Parents love Davis' ideas.
Many comments on the reel show a simple fire emoji, meaning that Davis' idea is hot. Parents want to try these delightful bites for their kids.
"As a reading teacher, I sooo love this," a teacher commented.
"This deserves 1 million + views," another person commented.
One follower joked, "I feel like an underachiever."
Davis is a budding entrepreneur.
Along with being an influencer, writer, and all-around busy mom, Davis also has her own line of Southern-inspired foods. Miss Lena's offers the chance to indulge in homestyle cooking with buttermilk and sweet potato biscuit mixes.
She also offers a line of jams with flavors like peach preserves, blackberry jam, and raspberry jam. She recently did a take on the popular butter board trend that included her jams, and it looks delicious.
"Have y'all seen the #butterboard trend that is taking over TikTok? It is a play on a charcuterie board and instead [of] using butter I made one with cream cheese. Of course if I was serving this at a party, I would have knives and plates ... Team No Double Dipping 🙅🏽♀️ The board tasted great but next time I will [add] another fruit for color," she shared.
