Why I’m Excited To Take My Kids To See ‘Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem’
When I think of all my favorite things about being a mom, sharing the things I loved when I was a kid with my own kids is high on the list. There's just something about watching my kids eat and enjoy a favorite family meal or seeing my husband's eyes light up when our son asks to wear his old championship baseball jersey during little league practice that makes this whole parenting thing worth it. In fact, one of my family's favorite things to do is watch movies from the ‘80s and ‘90s together, even if our kids call us "old" and comment on the lack of CGI and subpar graphics—A quick glance at my husband to reassure me that we are not old and that these movies are still the bomb, and I'm all good.
One of our favorite nostalgic franchises is the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. We have dressed as them as a family for Halloween, with my husband as Casey Jones, me as April O'Neil, and our little ones as Raph and Mikey. So it goes without saying that we are psyched for Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem, coming to theatres August 2.
What I adore about the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles is that everyone has their favorite. Maybe you're a leader like Leo, a techie like Donnie, a rebel like Raph, or have a heart of gold like Mikey. No matter which turtle you’re most like, these lovable green mutants have been around for decades for a reason: they are relatable, aspirational, and totally rad!
As my son approaches his teenage years, knowing that he has been a fan of these characters since before he could form complete sentences brings me comfort. If there has ever been a better group to emulate, it's the TMNT. Think about it, they are four brothers with very different strengths and weaknesses, yet they complement each other to take on great challenges. And while I have often related to April O'Neil, I think this time around Splinter and I are going to be "bros." His day-to-day stresses of raising four teenage turtles and trying to keep them safe while letting them blossom into individuals is all too relatable for me these days.
I love that I’ve been able to relate to all the characters for such a long time, and it brings me so much joy to see my sons forming their own bonds with the turtles. We are really looking forward to watching this movie as a family and adding it to the long list of things we love about these characters. The TMNT never disappoint!
