Two identical twin brothers are both paying the price for lying and deceiving a woman. The Brazilian men were allegedly covering for each other after one of the identical twins got a woman pregnant and then claimed the child wasn't his — it was his twin's. Neither brother is taking responsibility for the child, and because the twins are identical, DNA evidence has been less than helpful at proving who the real father is.

Fed up with their antics, a judge sentenced them harshly and is demanding that both men provide child support to the child's mother.

The judge ruled that both must financially support the 9-year-old girl, after a DNA test failed to identify who the real dad is.

According to The Guardian, the men live in Cachoeira Alta, a small rural town in Brazil. The mother of the girl — who has not been named in the media — said she met the father at a party held by mutual friends. “He told me he had a twin brother, but I wasn’t introduced," she explained, according to a court statement.

The brothers often used their likeness to impersonate each other to date as many women as possible, a statement from the court proceedings alleged.

"Since adolescence, the pair used their identical appearance to hide betrayals and win over more women,” the statement read.

"At the time [that they met] I didn’t suspect anything,” the mother said. She added that she had a brief relationship with one of the twins — referred to as pseudonyms Fernando and Fabrício in court — but in hindsight remembered that something was off on the day they met.

"The strange thing about the day is that he presented himself as Fernando, but he was with the yellow motorcycle that he said was Fabrício's," she said.

The woman later discovered she was pregnant.

In 2017, she went to court to demand the brothers take a DNA test and prove the child was theirs. The test came back positive, but neither twin was willing to admit he was the father. Because identical twins share 99.9% of their DNA, it was impossible for the test to determine which one was the father.

“It’s a very sad attitude, there was no need for this. They know the truth but took advantage of the similarity to escape responsibility,” she lamented.

There is another, more detailed, "twin test" that could potentially help her determine who the father is, but it is expensive and would not necessarily be conclusive, the court stated.

That's why the mother didn't give up and continued to pursue her case in court.

After her daughter turned 9 years old, the mom began seeking the truth and continued to push for both answers and for the brothers to take responsibility. The judge in their case agreed with a verdict that punishes the men for their actions.

Now, they must pay the price.

"One of the brothers, in bad faith, seeks to conceal paternity. Such behavior should not be protected by the judiciary,” Judge Felipe Peruca wrote. That is why he has ruled that both twins must pay 30% of Brazil's monthly minimum salary — about $76.88 — and split costs with the mother for medical, dental, clothing, and schooling.

Although this ruling might be considered a victory for some, the mother said she still wants to know which twin is the father of her child. "We believe the child has the right to know who the biological father is,” her lawyer said.
